A Proper Read Before You Apply for an MOT Test

Since May 20th, the MOT test criteria include certain alterations. Around 300,000 cars were let off from the annual test due to these changes. One of the most notable alterations was for diesel vehicles. The emission limits for diesel vehicles have been made stricter. Your car will face a major penalty if the MOT tester finds that the exhaust emissions are above the limit.

MOT is a mandate for every automobile in the UK. You can be fined up to £1,000 if your four-wheeler does not have an MOT certificate. There are many authorised test centres for conducting MOT tests all over the UK. The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standard Agency) certifies these garages and their technicians to perform the annual MOT test.

Here is how MOT works

MOT test inspects the following components:

  • Lighting and signalling equipment
  • Steering and suspension system
  • Brakes
  • Tyres and wheels
  • Seat-belts
  • Body, structure and general items. Components such as spoilers, bumpers and mirror housings.
  • Exhaust, fuel, and emissions (unless it is an electric one)
  • Driver’s view of the road

An MOT does not check the condition of the engine, gearbox, and clutch assembly. Factors like paint and interiors that don’t have an influence on safety are also exempted from the test.

Where you may stand after an MOT

The new test categories vehicles as per the results in the following segments. Here is all you need to know about them.

Dangerous

Automobiles featuring in this category are an immediate risk to road safety. You cannot drive your car unless you avail the necessary repairs if it falls in the ‘Dangerous’ segment. It is advisable to leave your commute in that test centre, get a quote and go ahead with the services if it fits your budget. You can also get quotes from other garages; however, if you choose to take your car to another garage, it has to be towed away.

Major

It means that your car has a safety issue, but it can be driven only if you are taking it to another garage for servicing. You should get the necessary repairs done and reapply within 10 working days. A failure to do so will invite penal fees.

Advisory

‘Advisory’ means that the faults can become serious in the near future. These are not really faults but servicing suggestions. A good car servicing will take care of an advisory issue.

Minor

If your four-wheeler falls under this category, it is not breaching any road laws. Any automobile featuring in the ‘Minor’ segment has trivial issues such as non-functioning wipers. You can generally fix these issues yourself.

When visiting a service garage, don’t just focus on the MOT. Instead, use it as an opportunity to go forward with the necessary repairs. Either for a pre-MOT check-up or any other issues pertaining to Vehicle Servicing in Newport, you can drive your car to a reliable auto garage like Trade Price Tyres.
