There are a lot of differences between a radial tyre fitting reading and a bias tyre.

ConstructionRadial Tyre – They have steel belts that run at a 90-degree angle from the centre line of the tread. There are two parts to these tyres: along the sidewall and also along the tread. These belts are composed of steel piles that are coated with rubber which are resistant to cuts and are very tough as well. The crown of the tyre is stabilised by placing the steel piles under the tread.
Bias Tyre – Made from a single unit, they have nylon belts made from layers of criss-cross nylon and rubber-coated piles. These run around the centre line of the tread at about 30-45 degree. This makes the sidewalls very tough.
Cut Resistant and Puncture
Radial Tyre – Their construction is such that makes them resistant to any kinds of cuts and penetrations, specifically in the area of the tread. In case of damage, only a little portion of the tyres reading would be affected.
Bias Tyre – These tyres are resistant to cuts in the area of the sidewall. A defect in the tread area may cause about 35 per cent of the tyre to get affected.
Quality of Ride
Radial Tyre – Offering better traction, these tyres offer better quality, especially in SUVs.
Bias Tyre – Used majorly in buses and trucks, they do not offer a smooth ride but still due to their sidewalls are considered productive.
Radial Tyre – The weight gets distributed evenly in case of these tyres as they have a stiff tread. This also increases the tyres tread life as they are prone to wear less.
Bias Tyre – Deflecting of the sidewall leads to the lifting of the tread from the middle, ultimately causing tread erosion and reduced tyre longevity.
Tolerance of Heat
Radial Tyre – These tyres are known to minimise heat as they are built from a single body of steel with a hard tread. This feature enable these tyres to be driven for longer distances at high speeds.
Bias Tyre – These tyres do not reduce the tyre heat as compared to radial tyres.
Advantages of Radial Tyres
- At the speed of the highway roads and under heavy load, these tyres rub cooler.
- The steel belts offer robust construction and resistance to punctures.
- Even ground contact offers uniform tread wear
- The footprint of the tyres are wide keeping the car stable
Disadvantages of Radial Tyres:
- The steel belts in these tyres have an impact on the quality of the ride.
- The impact from curbs could result in the damage of the sidewall
- Tyre noise is due to the hard tread of the tyre.
Advantages of Bias Ply Tyres:
- The crosshatch make of the tyre results in strong sidewalls
- These tyres offer smooth rides on rough conditions
- They cost less than radial tyres
Disadvantages of Bias Ply Tyres:
- More traction results in the faster wearing of tread
- Increased rolling resistance could affect fuel efficiency
- During cornering, there is less traction due to a roll-over effect
