DPF or diesel particulate filter are components that extract diesel particulates physically to prevent them from being released in the atmosphere. They are designed to wipe off the soot that is generated by the diesel engines and control emissions. Because of the limited capacity of the DPF, the collected soot has to be disposed of or ‘burned’ from time to time to revive the DPF. PROCESS OF REGENERATING A DPF

The process of regenerating a DPF is a procedure that involves cleaning the filters to dump the soot that is collected from the engine because else, the filter becomes jammed and the vehicle won’t function properly.

There are two ways in which DPF can be rejuvenated or regenerated- passive and active regeneration.

Passive regeneration takes place when the vehicle is running on the road for a period of nearly half an hour, without the driver knowing it. The time span of 30 mins permits the exhaust to settle at the right temperature and burn off the particulates.

Active regeneration is mainly meant for drivers that are on the road for shorter distances and thereby don’t reach the limit for passive regeneration and may still have burnt soot in the DPF. Once the filter reaches a certain limit while the vehicle is being driven and the fuel is fed into the engine, the exhaust temperature rises, and the particulates burn off. Active regeneration needs a time span of around 15 minutes with the vehicle moving at a speed of about 60km/h.
