Tyre tread types

The tread of a tyre is the only part that touches the road surface and there is a vast range of different depths and patterns. Even though some drivers take them for granted, it is very important to know what type of treads are out there before buying a new set of tyres.

The type of tread pattern that you choose will have a huge impact on the overall performance of your Tyres Gosport, like the amount of traction they have and how they manage to move on different types of weather and driving situations.

A tread is designed based on five principal elements:

Grooves: they are channels situated among the tread ribs and surround your tyres.

Tread blocks: they are elevated parts made out of rubber which contact the surface.

Cross slots: they provide additional water evacuation.

Sipes: They are tiny slits located in the ribs and tread blocks. They improve the traction and raise the amount of biting edges.

Tread ribs: they are the elevated part of the tread pattern.

At the same time, there are four types of tread, depending on the conditions of the road:

Symmetrical

Symmetrical tread uses only one pattern on the entire tyre: either lugs or grooves. This kind is very popular and highly recommended since it lasts longer and is quieter. They can easily be rotated in several ways, which prolongs its durability.

Directional (unidirectional)

This type of tread allows removing all the water from your tyre, which avoids hydroplaning. It is designed to turn in one way and usually contains arrows that show the right direction.

Asymmetrical

The asymmetrical tread is mainly used in sports cars. It combines different patterns which give your tyre a better grip on dry and wet roads. Regularly, the outside has bigger tread blocks to increase its cornering capability while driving on dry roads. The middle and inside parts are made especially for wet surfaces.

Directional/Asymmetrical

This kind of tyre tread is considered to be the best one because it mixes the V-shaped design of directional treads, which help to discharge water, and it also takes the dry climate traction of asymmetrical treads.

Tread patterns are made specifically to allow your tyres to get a better grip in the surface, mostly on challenging roads such as dirt, sand, and mud. When you find yourself in any of these circumstances, the tread will allow you to enjoy a smoother and safer ride.

Once you have used your tyres for quite a while, the tread can easily start to tear apart. One important thing to remember is to avoid having your tread depth under the suggested minimum level. If you perceive that your tread depth has already passed this level, you will encounter some issues to keep a decent handle and road contact. You will also notice that your vehicle does not brake correctly, mainly while driving on wet or snowy roads.

It is crucial to monitor that your tyres are in good condition and that the tread has nor surpassed the required depth. If you suspect that your tread is worn, do not hesitate and find the best Tyre Fitting Gosport to avoid further damages.
